Jagannatha Varma, Indian actor, Died at 77

K. N. Jagannatha Varma was born on May 1, 1939, and died on December 20, 2016.

He was an actor in Malayalam film and Television serial.

Varma was also an accomplished Kathakali artist.

Jagannatha’s son Manu Varma also a recognized artist and his son-in-law Viji Thampi is a well-known film director.

Varma acted in a number of Malayalam movies performing stereotypical roles of a senior police officer, judge or a priest.

A selection of his noted roles includes New Delhi, Lelam, and Pathram.

Varma joined the Kerala Police Force in 1963, before getting active in movies.

Varma retired from Kerala Police as an S.P. (Superintendent of police).

He was an accomplished Kathakali artist, having mastered the art from Pallippuram Gopalan Nair Asan.

Varma was also a percussionist, learned the art from Kalamandalam Raman Namboothiri after retiring from Government service.

Varma’s younger brother K. N. Surendranatha Varma, a retired college professor, is also a Kathakali artist.
