Irish uilleann piper, Liam O’Flynn, Died at 72


Liam O’Flynn was born Liam Ó Floinn on April 15, 1945, and died on March 14, 2018.

He was an Irish uilleann piper and Irish traditional musician.

Other than his solo career and his work with the group Planxty, O’Flynn recorded with many international musical artists, including Christy Moore, Dónal Lunny, Andy Irvine, Kate Bush, Mark Knopfler, the Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Mike Oldfield, Mary Black, Enya and Sinéad O’Connor.

He was very educated as Ireland’s foremost exponent of the uilleann pipes and brought the music of the instrument to a worldwide audience.

During 2007, he was named Musician of the Year at the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards, considered to be the foremost recognition given to traditional Irish musicians.

He died at 72 years old.
