Initially, he represented the party while standing in the 1988 Tripura Legislative Assembly elections.
Subsequently, Khagendra Jamatia won the reelection five consecutive times through 2013 and was again backed by the CPM in the 2018 election cycle.
He was diagnosed with cancer while campaigning and died in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on 2 March 2018.
Khagendra Jamatia died at 64 years old.
