Ian Murdock, American software engineer, Died at 42

Ian Murdock was born on April 28, 1973, and died on December 28, 2015.

He was an American software engineer.

Murdock was well known for being the founder of the Debian project and Progeny Linux Systems, a commercial Linux company.

Ian Ashley Murdock was born in Konstanz, West Germany on 28 April 1973.

Ian wrote the Debian Manifesto when he was still a student at Purdue University.

He received his bachelor’s degree in computer science in 1996 at Purdue University.

Debian was named after his then-girlfriend Debra Lynn, and himself (Deb and Ian).

They got married in the earl 90’s, filed for divorce on the week of 10 August 2007,

They officially divorce in January 2008

In 2003, Ian has also worked for the Sun Microsystems to lead Project Indiana, which he described as “taking the lesson that Linux has brought to the operating system and providing that for Solaris”, making a full ‘OpenSolaris’ distribution with GNOME and ‘userland’ tools from GNU plus a network-based package management system.

From the year 2007 to February 2010, Ian was Vice President of Emerging Platforms at Sun.

Up until the company decided to merged with Oracle and he resigned his position with the company.

For four years, he was Vice President of Platform and Developer Community at Salesforce Marketing Cloud, based in Indianapolis.

He worked for Docker, Inc. from the year 2015 up ontil his death.

The cause of death was not clear.

Ian Murdock passed away at 42 yrs old.
