Hiwi Tauroa

Māori rugby union player, school principal, and civil servant Edward Te Rangihiwinui “Hiwi” Tauroa was born in 1927, in Okaiawa, near Hawera in Taranaki and died on December 11, 2018.

He was of Ngāpuhi descent, was born the son of a Methodist minister.

Hiwi Tauroa’s parents moved around a lot, which led to him starting his school life at Waima in the Hokianga.

After which Hiwi Tauroa went to Hawera Technical High School, where Hiwi Tauroa won a scholarship to study at the University of Auckland.

Patricia (née Wilson), was his wife of 60 years.

They had six children, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Hiwi Tauroa passed away at 91 years old, in Hokianga, aged 91.
