When she retired she was the state’s longest-serving legislator.
Sommers was born in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey and attended the University of Washington.
Sommers was also a Charles Bullard Forest Research Fellow at Harvard University.
He died in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
