Gurdial Singh was born on January 10, 1933, and died on August 16, 2016.
He was a Punjabi writer, novelist, and story-writer from Punjab, India.
Singh began his literary career in 1957 with a short-story, Bhaganwale.
He became known as a novelist when he published the novel Marhi Da Deeva in 1964.
However, Two of his novels have been made into films including Marhi Da Deeva (1989) directed by Surinder Singh and Anhe Ghore Da Daan (2011) directed by Gurvinder Singh.
After Amrita Pritam, he was the second Punjabi writer to receive the Jnanpith Award.
Gurdial Singh passed away at 85 years old.
