Gilbert Edmund Kaplan was born on March 3, 1941, in New York City and died on January 1, 2016.

He was an American businessman, journalist and conductor.

Mr. Kaplan founded the magazine Institutional Investor in 1967.

Kaplan was the publisher of the magazine until 1990, and editor-in-chief for two more years, however, he sold it in 1984.

One newspaper reported that “The price was never disclosed but was rumored to be about $75 million.

Gilbert then concentrated on conducting, hiring Avery Fisher Hall in New York for his debut in 1982.

Mr. Kaplan established the Kaplan Foundation which is dedicated to scholarship and the promotion of the music of Gustav Mahler.

After he had completed his person research, Gilbert has twice recorded Mahler’s Second Symphony: with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1987, and with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2002.

Mr. A Holden wrote of the 2002 recording: “This is not just a historic recording, indispensable to serious collectors; it is awesome music making that will have Mahlerians in raptures.”

Gilbert was the owner of the autograph manuscript of Mahler’s score of the second symphony and published a facsimile edition of the score in 1986.

The Second Symphony by Mahler was the only complete work he conducted, although he had also recorded the Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

Over his career, he has worked with over fifty orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Philharmonic Orchestra of La Scala.

Joseph Brooks was his brother, which was an Academy Award-winning composer who was found dead at his New York City apartment on May 22, 2011, in an apparent suicide while under criminal indictment on multiple sexual-assault and rape counts.

Gilbert Kaplan passed away at 74 yrs old due to cancer.
