Georges Balandier was born on December 21, 1920, and died on October 5, 2016.

He was a French sociologist, anthropologist and ethnologist.

He was noted for his research in Sub-Saharan Africa. Balandier was born in in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont.

Balandier was a professor at the Sorbonne (Université René Descartes, Paris-V).

He was a member of the Center for African Studies (Centre d’études africaines, a research center of the École pratique des hautes études (School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences).

He had held for many years the Editorship of Cahiers Internationaux de Sociologie (previously held by his mentor Georges Gurvitch) and edited the series Sociologie d’Aujourd’hui at Presses Universitaires de France.

Georges Balandier passed away at 95 years old.
