He started out writing for animated shows such as Rugrats, Duckman and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.

His credits include Crossing Jordan, The $treet, The Evidence, Bones, Shark and The Mentalist.

When he died, Gary was the writer for NCIS.

He was married to writer Mimi Schmir and had two sons.

He died in his sleep in Los Angeles.
