Upon graduation from Brandon High School in Brandon, Florida, Hancock was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 22nd round of the 1972 Major League Baseball Draft, but chose instead to play ball at the University of South Carolina.
Garry was drafted again in the 1974 Major League Baseball Draft, the 1974 secondary and the 1975 secondary by the Cleveland Indians, Rangers and California Angels, respectively, but did not sign at that time, choosing instead to remain in school.
Garry finally signed when the Indians made him the number seventeen overall selection of the 1976 Major League Baseball Draft’s January secondary phase.
He died at age 61 on October 10, 2015.
