Frederick Gilroy, more commonly known as Freddie Gilroy was born on March 7, 1936, and died on June 28, 2016.

He was a Northern Irish boxer.

He had won a bronze medal for Ireland at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne at Bantamweight.

Freddie Gilroy went professional shortly after winning his Olympic medal and he would go on to win British, Commenwealth and European titles in a short five-year career.

Durring 1960 he fought Alphonse Halimi for the World Bantamweight title but lost on points in London, despite knocking down Halimi in the fifteenth round.

He fought fellow Belfast man in 1963 and Olympic medallist John Caldwell in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest fights ever to be held in Ireland.

He won after a cut to Caldwell’s eye stopped him from carrying on.

Instantly after he announced his retirement.

Freddie Gilroy passed away at 80 yrs old.
