Eugene Garfield was born on September 16, 1925 and died on February 26, 2017.

He was an American linguist and businessman, one of the founders of bibliometrics and scientometrics.

He was born in New York City, and was raised in a Lithuanian in a Italian Jewish family.

Garfield received a PhD in Structural Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961.

He had founded the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), which was located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

His work led to the development of several Information Retrieval algorithms, like HITS and Pagerank.

Eugene Garfield passed away at 91 years old.
