Elliot Sperling was born on January 4, 1951, and died in January, 2017.

He was an American historian.

Sperling was one of the world’s leading historians of Tibet and Tibetan-Chinese relations, a MacArthur Fellow and a relentless advocate for human rights.

Sperling spent most of his scholarly career (twenty-nine years on the faculty) at Indiana University’s Department of Central Eurasian Studies, seven of them as the department’s chair.

He has mentored numerous graduate students who pursue both academic and nonacademic careers all over the world.

Elliot Sperling passed away at 66 years old.
