Dmitry Vasil’evich Shirkov/Дми́трий Васи́льевич Ширко́в was born on March 3, 1928, and died on January 23, 2016.

He was a Russian theoretical physicist.

He was known for his contribution to quantum field theory and to the development of the renormalization group method.

He received his education at the Faculty of Physics at Moscow State University (MSU) in 1949.

In 1954, he obtained a PhD degree (Candidate of Sciences) in the area of theory of neutron diffusion.

In 1958, he defended his doctoral dissertation “Renormalization group method in quantum field theory” and obtained the Doktor nauk (Doctor of Sciences) degree.

From 1972 to 1992, Dmitry was appointed as Professor at the Department of Quantum Statistics and Field Theory at the MSU Faculty of Physics.

As of 1992, Dmitry was a Professor at the Department of High Energy Physics.

Shirkov worked in the Steklov Mathematical Institute in the period 1956 to 1958 and in the Mathematical Institute of the Siberian Division of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the period 1960 to 1969.

Since 1969, he served at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), and since 1971 also at Moscow State University.

Heading the Theoretical Physics Laboratory at the JINR (1993 to 1997), where currently he is the Honorary Director.

Dmitry Shirkov was an Invited Nobel Professor at Lund University, Sweden (1970 to 1971).

Mr. Shirkov became a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1960 and an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994.

He was the instigator and the editor for a series of monographs by Nauka (Science) Publishing Company (1978 to1990).

Shirkov served as a jury president for the Bogoliubov Prize for young scientists.

Dmitry Vasil’evich Shirkov passed away at 87 yrs old.
