David Poythress, American military officer and politician, Died at 73

David B. Poythress was born on October 24, 1943, and died on January 15, 2017.

He was a Georgia politician, born in Bibb County, Georgia.

Poythress has served terms as Secretary of State and Commissioner of Labor of the state of Georgia.

He also served as the Adjutant General of the Georgia National Guard from 1999 until 2007, initially appointed by Governor Roy Barnes and subsequently reappointed by Governor Sonny Perdue.

Poythress retired as a Lieutenant General.

During 1998, he made an unsuccessful bid for Governor of Georgia.

On August 26, 2008, he announced his plans to run again as a Democratic candidate for Governor in the 2010 election.

During 1998 and 2010, Poythress lost to Roy Barnes.

He and his wife Elizabeth have three grown children and eight grandchildren.

Poythress was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

David Poythress passed away at 73 years old.
