David C. H. Austin

British rose breeder David Charles Henshaw Austin was born on February 16, 1926, and died on December 18, 2018.

He was a rose breeder and writer who resided in Shropshire, England.

Austin’s emphasis was on breeding roses with the character and fragrance of old garden roses (such as gallicas, damasks and alba roses) but with the repeat-flowering ability and wide color range of modern roses such as hybrid teas and floribundas.

Austin’s first financially accessible rose, Rosa ‘Constance Spry’, was presented in 1961.

In 1967 and 1968 he presented ‘Chianti’ and ‘Shropshire Lass’ individually.

Despite the fact that these first roses sprouted just once in spring or late-spring, they drove, in 1969, to a progression of remontant (continue blooming) assortments, including ‘Spouse of Bath’ and ‘Canterbury’ (both to pay tribute to the English creator Geoffrey Chaucer).

Austin’s roses before long turned into the best gathering of new roses in the twentieth century.

David C. H. Austin passed away 92 years old.
