Danilo Kulinyak, Ukrainian poet and historian, Died at 67

Danilo Kulinyak was born on April 2, 1948, in Irpin, and died on January 5, 2016.

He was a Ukrainian poet, novelist, journalist, essayist, historian and ecologist.

Danilo was a member of the dissident movement in the Soviet Union.

He was also a member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine and the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine and a member of the Board of the Congress of Writers of Ukraine.

Kulinyak lived in Irpen of the Kiev region.

Following his graduation in 1963 Sokal boarding school, he entered the Kherson Nautical College of the fishing industry.

On December 16, 1964, Danilo Kulinyak was arrested for creating the clandestine nationalist youth organization “Vіsniki Svobody Ukraine (Heralds of Freedom of Ukraine)” and anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda.

Danilo worked as an archeologist, head of the department in the regional museum Romny (Sumy region).

It was not a big enough crime to punish him, he was expelled from school and Komsomol until 1985, he was under open surveillance of the KGB.

He received education at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute, in 1966, and graduated in 1972 (thanks to the intercession of AT Tvardovsky).

The writer was one of the founders of Ukrainian environmental organization “Green World”, a member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, has the title of “Honored
Journalist of Ukraine.

Danilo Kulinyak was awarded the “Golden Pen (Golden Pen)” in 1993, The award “Nezalezhnіst (independence)” in 2003, and in December 2012 h was awarded the prize named after Alexander Oles, who founded the NGO “Sumy fraternity in Kiev” a collection of poetry “The underwater continent.”

Danilo Kulinyak has authored a numerous amount of books and over three thousand publications in Ukrainian and foreign mass media.

Danilo Kulinyak passed away at 67 yrs old.
