Cyril Edel Leonoff was born on February 22, 1925, and died on April 17, 2016.

He was a Canadian civil engineer, historian and author.

Cyril Leonoff was the founding president of the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia.

He attended schools in the north end of Winnipeg, where many of the students were Jewish.

Cyril’s Jewish education was provided mostly by a private tutor.

In his second year at the University of Manitoba, Leonoff joined the Canadian Armed Forces and was stationed in Kingston, Ontario in the Signal Corps.

Approaching the end of World War II in Europe, Cyril was posted to the Signals Research establishment in Ottawa.

Leonoff then returned to the University of Manitoba where he completed a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

In his studies, Cyril met his future wife, Faye Matlin.

During his 36 years engineering career, he made significant contributions to the profession, participated in engineering societies, and authored many technical papers.

During 2000, Cyril Leonoff received the Vancouver Geotechnical Society Award for significant contributions to the local practice of geotechnical engineering and was inducted as a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Cyril Leonoff passed away at 91 yrs old.
