Clarence Francis “Larry” Matthews was born on May 1, 1906, in Oakland and died on July 22, 2017.

He was an American supercentenarian.

He was the fifth oldest child of nine to Frank and Maryanne.

Clarence Francis “Larry” Matthews started a successful construction company in the 1970s.

Matthews was twice married, first to Barbara Hirsher (on June 9, 1931, with whom he had two children), and then to Kay. Matthews was the oldest man in the United States following the death of US army veteran Frank Levingston on May 3, 2016.

Matthews had lived through both World War I and World War II and supported his family though the era of The Great Depression.

He was current oldest man (by ten days), in the U.S., is African American Richard Arvin Overton.

He died in Indian Wells, Southern California.
