Cindy Nicholas, Canadian long distance swimmer and politician, Died at 58

Cynthia Maria Nicholas was born on August 20, 1957, and died on May 19, 2016.
She was a long distance swimmer and a politician in Ontario, Canada.
Cindy served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal member from 1987 to 1990.
Nicholas was elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1987 provincial election, defeating New Democratic Party candidate Menno Vorster by 3,396 votes.
She received her education at the University of Toronto and the University of Windsor.
Cindy worked as a lawyer in Scarborough, Ontario.
She started swimming at a young age at just age 16 she attained provincial fame by swimming across Lake Ontario in 15 hours and 10 minutes.
Then she decided to take on the English Channel, which she swan across on 19 occasions, including the first two-way crossing by a woman.
Nicholas gained a record five two-way crossings including two in one year, earning her the sobriquet Queen of the Channel.
Cindy Nicholas was named top female athlete of the year in 1977 and given the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award.
Cindy Nicholas was made a Member of the Order of Canada, in 1979.
During 1993, Cindy was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2005.
Cindy Nicholas was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
Cindy Nicholas died from liver cancer.
Cindy Nicholas passed away at 58 yrs old.
