Charles Z. Smith was born on February 23, 1927, and died on August 28, 2016.

He was an American judge.

Smith was appointed the Washington State Supreme Court Justice from 1988 to 2002.

Judge Charles was the first person of color and the only African-American to hold the position.

Eleanor “Elie” Jane Martinez became his wife in 1955.

Together they had four children and currently reside in Seattle.

He died at his home in Seattle, Washington.
