Cape Verdean writer, Ivone Ramos, Died at 91

Ivone Aida Lopes Fernandes Ramos was born on September 7, 1926, in Santa Catarina on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde and died on March 3, 2018.

She was a Cape Verdean writer.

She resided in Mindelo.

Her parents were Armando Napoleão Rodrigues Fernandes and Alice Lopes da Silva Fernandes.

She came from a literary family, i.e her uncles José Lopes da Silva, the poet, her cousins were António Aurélio Gonçalves and Baltasar Lopes da Silva, her sister was Orlanda Amarílis and her brother in law was Manuel Ferreira.

After she moved to the island of São Vicente and lived in her uncle’s house, the writer António Aurélio Gonçalves, she began writing stories and folklore books from Cape Verde.

Her stories had been told by her neighbors, their housewives and the elders in Santa Catarina and São Nicolau, in the yard and the house door, with the starry sky and the boys sitting and telling stories.

Her stories inspired her following works.

Ivone Ramos’s first book was Vidas Vividas published in 1990.

Ramos then re-edited her father’s book Léxico do dialecto crioulo do arquipélago de Cabo Verde in 1990 in Mindelo.

After which she made more stories including “Futcera ta cendê na Rotcha” (2000) and “Exilada” (2005).

During 2009 Ivone Ramos published a children’s short story book titled Mam Bia tita conta estória na criol (Mãe Bia está a counter histórias em crioulo).

Arnaldo da Silva Gonçalves was her husband , together they had children, one of whom is Carlos Filipe Gonçalves who is a journalist.

She died at 91 years old.
