Originally street cats at the United Kingdom these have travelled a long way. Finding their way inside United States of America via the shores, these purring teddy bear cats have managed to establish a special place in their owner’s heart. These breeds have found their way a force to be reckoned with at the shows.

 

Being a refinement of a natural domestic shorthair, that’s believed to have inhabited from the Britain during the Roman period, these are found to be the most efficient rodent controller.

 

Being one of the oldest English breeds tracing the ancestral origin backs at Rome for this cat breeds. It’s to be noted that these are the first breed to be prized for their physical strengths and hunting abilities.

 

By exhibiting number of different colours in the beginning of 20th century, British shorthairs were very successful in early cat shows. It was during World War 1, the cat fancy at United Kingdom was affected that it was difficult task for breeders to find good quality British Shorthair for breeding upon the world war.

 

It was during this time, those unregistered domestic shorthairs were introduced for the breeding programs that the new generation of British Shorthairs were formed. Since this new generation lacked the type that’s required to win the shows, breeders started the outcross with those of Persians to regain the original type.

 

This process was followed after both the world wars. During the early 20th century, these registered breeds were imported to United States of America.

 

This worldwide breed has been and continuing to be imported across the globe to expand the gene pool. With their dense coat these have large round eyes, varying in size starting from medium to large and come in many different colours. Though most of these are found in blue shades, many mistake all blue cats for British Shorthairs. These cats are still considered as one of the minority breeds by the Cat’s Francier Associations.

 

Though these breeds look huge in size, they aren’t as big as Main Coon. Mature males weighing from 9 to 17 pounds, whereas mature females weigh starting from 6 to 12 pounds. These breeds have no specific breed related diseases, mainly because of the very fact that so many breeds over the years have used these breeds as the most acceptable outcross that has been established with a good gene pool.

Compared to other cats these are very calm cats and easy going in nature talking infrequently. Being very affectionate, these get attached to owners very quickly. Training a British Shorthairs is an easy job and thus makes them adaptable to an activity sooner.

 

British Shorthairs are so friendly in nature that they not only get along with humans; they are quite comfortable with other pets along with them. Be it any stranger’s visit home, given some time, these varieties of feline family warm up with them soon.

 

Usually British Shorthair kittens are available for sale between 12 to 16 weeks of their age. It’s advise of experts that, when the kittens are 12 weeks they start their bonding with humans and get well adjusted. All reputed breeders ensure that the new home of these kittens are spayed and they are safe indoors with their new owners.
