Bonita Mabo

Australian educator and indigenous activist Bonita Mabo was born in 1943, in Halifax, Queensland and died on November 26, 2018.

She was an Australian South Sea Islander of Ni-Vanuatu drop whose precursors were “blackbirded” to work in the sugar stick industry in Queensland.

Her granddad was “blackbirded” from Tanna in what is currently Vanuatu.

In the 2012 TV film Mabo, Deborah Mailman assumed the job of Bonita Mabo.

On May 31, 2018, a star was named in her respect at the Sydney Observatory, amid the visit of the N.S.W. Legal Commission’s Ngara Yura Program to the Observatory.

Her girl Ms. Gail Mabo was available since Bonita was sick. Another star, Koiki, had been named in memory of Eddie Koiki Mabo in 2015 on the 23rd commemoration of the Mabo choice.

Bonita Mabo was delegated an Officer of the Order of Australia on Australia Day 2013.

On November 17, 2018, James Cook University presented upon Bonita Mabo a Honorary Doctorate of Letters in acknowledgment of her extraordinary commitment to the network at a private function held in Brisbane.

Bonita Mabo died in Brisbane at 75 years old.
