Belisario Betancur

Colombian politician Belisario Betancur Cuartas was born on February 4, 1923, in the Morro de la Paila district of the town of Amagá, Antioquia and died on December 7, 2018.

He served as the 26th President of Colombia from 1982 to 1986.

Belisario Betancur was a member of the Colombian Conservative Party.

Betancur’s presidency was noted for its attempted peace talks with several Colombian guerilla groups.

Betancur was also one of the few presidents to abstain from participating in politics after leaving office.

Belisario Betancur’s parents were Rosendo Betancur, a blue-collar worker, and Ana Otilia Cuartas, a businesswoman.

His mother died in 1950.

He traveled to the city of Medellín, where he enrolled in the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.

He graduated in jurisprudence and obtained a degree in law and economics, in 1955.

Rosa Helena Álvarez Yepes became his wife in 1946.

The couple had three children including diplomat Diego Betancur Álvarez.

In 1998, Álvarez Yepes died .

Betancur married Dalia Rafaela Navarro Palmar, in October 2000.
