Robert Baxt was born on June 27, 1938, in Shanghai, China and died on March 11, 2018.

He was an Australian lawyer and a chairman of the Trade Practices Commission (now the ACCC), Dean of Law at Monash University and a Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne.

He was a partner of the Australian commercial law firm Herbert Smith Freehills.

Initially, Baxt joined Freehills as a solicitor in 1965 before entering academia.

Baxt was Dean of the Monash University Faculty of Law, from 1980–1988.

Baxt was a partner at Allens Arthur Robinson (1991–2004).

Robert Baxt rejoined Freehills in January 2005 and became an emeritus partner.

Baxt was engaged in a number of Australian legal publications.

Baxt was the founder and then General Editor of the Company and Securities Law Journal as well as the Australian Business Law Review.

He did at 79 years old.
