Anthony Mellows, British barrister and academic, Died at 79

Anthony Roger Mellows was born on July 29, 1936, and died on January 10, 2016.

He was an English barrister, academic and British Army officer.

Mellows served as Lord Prior of the Order of Saint John, the order’s most senior non-royal office.

He started his military career in the British Army by joining the other ranks, rising to the rank of sergeant.

Mellows was commissioned in the TA Intelligence Corps, as a second lieutenant (probationary), on January 27, 1959.

Anthony was promoted to captain and seconded to the Staff, on January 1, 1964,

Anthony Mellows transferred to the newly created Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve as a captain in the Intelligence Corps, on April 1, 1967.

He was placed on the Regular Army Reserve of Officers list, on November 18, 1970,

He was also a Professor of Law in the University of London and served as Head of the Department of Law at King’s College London and Dean of the Faculty of Laws of the University of London.

Anthony Mellows was also appointed an Officer of the Most Venerable Order of Saint John, in May 1981,

On April 1985, Anthony was promoted to the grade of Commander.

Mellows was raised to Knight of Justice, in 1988.

He was advanced as Bailiff Grand Cross of the Order of Saint John, its highest grade, in July 1991.

Mellows also was decorated with the St John Service Medal and in 1969, he received the Territorial Decoration (TD) awarded for long service as a Territorial Army officer.

Anthony Mellows passed away at 79 yrs old.
