Andrei Karlov (born Andrei Gennadyevich Karlov) was born on February 4, 1954, in Moscow and died on December 19, 2016.
He was the Russian Ambassador to Turkey.
He was educated at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and the Diplomatic Academy.
Andrei Karlov started his career with the government at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR in 1976.
He went on to hold various diplomatic positions at the Russian embassy to North Korea.
Andrei Karlov has been the Russian ambassador to Turkey since July 2013.
He is now the fourth Russian ambassador to have died in the line of duty, the first being Alexander Griboyedov, murdered in 1829 in Tehran
He was fatally shot by an off-duty Turkish police officer, Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, at an art exhibition in Ankara, Turkey.
His assassination took place after several days of protests in Turkey over Russian involvement in the Syrian Civil War and the battle about Aleppo, though the Russian and Turkish governments had been negotiating a ceasefire.
He was married to Marina Karlov and had a son
