American clergyman and biblical scholar, Eugene H. Peterson, Died at 85

Eugene H. Peterson was born on November 6, 1932, in East Stanwood, Washington and died on October 22, 2018.

He was an American-born clergyman, scholar, author, and poet.

Peterson was the writer of over thirty books, including Gold Medallion Book Award winner The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language (Navpress Publishing Group, 2002), a paraphrase of the Bible.

He was raised in Kalispell, Montana.

Peterson received his B.A. in philosophy from Seattle Pacific University, his S.T.B. from New York Theological Seminary, and his M.A. in Semitic languages from Johns Hopkins University.

Peterson also held several honorary doctoral degrees.

He was a founding pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in Bel Air, Maryland in 1962, where he served for 29 years before retiring in 1991.

Peterson was the James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia from 1993-1998.

Peterson resided in Montana until his death in 2018.

Eugene H. Peterson passed away at 85 years old.
