Alexander Surtees Chancellor was born on January 4, 1940, and died on January 28, 2017.

He was a British journalist.

He was educated at Eton College and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

He was the editor of the conservative Spectator magazine from 1975 to 1984.

Until January 2012, Chancellor contributed a weekly column in The Guardian, published in the “Weekend” supplement each Saturday.

During March 2012, Chancellor began to contribute to The Spectator again, with a column entitled “Long Life”.

He lived in Northamptonshire and is the father of British model Cecilia Chancellor and the uncle of British actress Anna Chancellor.

Chancellor was also the grandson of Sir John Chancellor, the first Governor of Southern Rhodesia.

Chancellor was appointed a CBE in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to journalism.
