Alan Prince, Canadian bureaucrat, Died at 100

Alan Theodore Prince was born in Toronto in 1915, and died on October 2, 2015.

He graduated from the University of Toronto with a BA and an MA in Mineralogy and a PhD from the Univ, Chicago in 1941.

After working for the National Research Council, Canadian Refractories Ltd. and the University of Manitoba, Alan joined the Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys in Ottawa as head of the Ceramics Section in 1946.

Alan occupied increasingly important positions with the department becoming Director of the Water Research Branch of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) 1965 to 1967.

He became Director General of the Inland Water Branch of the Dept of Environment in 1967 before returning to the EMR as Assistant Deputy Minister in 1973.

Alan was appointed as president of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) in 1975 where he tried to make the board more public.

After his retirement in 1978, Alan became a consultant on projects such as the treatment and disposal of uranium tailings, the response of the federal government to the Chernobyl reactor incident in 1986 and Ontario Hydro’s emergency plans for its nuclear reactors.

Alan passed away at age 100 in October 2015.
