Tommy Lee Jones

Tommy Lee Jones is an American actor born on September 15, 1946, in San Saba, Texas, Tommy Lee Jones was Al Gore’s Harvard roommate for four years. Upon graduation, he moved to New York and then to Hollywood, where his career path changed dramatically.

He is the only child of Clyde Jones, a cowboy-turned-oil-field worker, and his wife, Lucille Marie. His parents were married and divorced twice; as he later revealed in interviews, Jones had a difficult adolescence, enduring a good deal of physical abuse at the hands of his father.

A talented athlete and student, Jones eventually won a football scholarship to Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His roommate for all four years at Harvard was Al Gore, a future United States senator, vice president, and presidential candidate. Jones, an English literature major, became an all-Ivy offensive guard on the football team.

In early 1971, he returned to Broadway in Abe Burrows’ Four on a Garden where he shared the stage with Carol Channing and Sid Caesar. Between 1971 and 1975 he portrayed Dr. Mark Toland on the ABC soap opera, One Life to Live.

He returned to the stage for a 1974 production of Ulysses in Nighttown with Zero Mostel. It was followed by the acclaimed TV movie The Amazing Howard Hughes, where he played the lead role. In 1980, Jones earned his first Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of country singer Loretta Lynn’s husband, Doolittle “Mooney” Lynn, in the popular Coal Miner’s Daughter.

In 1981 he played a drifter opposite Sally Field in Back Roads, a comedy that received middling reviews. In 1983, he received an Emmy for Best Actor for his performance as murderer Gary Gilmore in a TV adaptation of Norman Mailer’s The Executioner’s Song. That same year he starred in a pirate adventure, Nate and Hayes, playing the heavily-bearded pirate Captain Bully Hayes.

In Batman Forever (1995), his character of “Two-Face” flips a coin to see if his victims should live or die. Twelve years later he played a sheriff in No Country for Old Men (2007) pursuing an assassin who kills random victims by asking them to call a coin toss.

At the 2000 Democratic National Convention, he presented the nominating speech for Al Gore as the Democratic Party’s nominee for President of the United States. His career was indeed prosperous in the particular genre for his face might have been chiselled out of marble, so hard that it’s more suitable to be in action movies.

Like his role in “Space Cowboys”, Tommy didn’t hesitate to take an old character in “The Missing” (2003) as Cate Blanchett’s father.

Two years later, he sat in the position of director and actor of “The Three Burial of Melquiades Estrada”, a movie very close to his heart as the Mexican influence was rather broad, in 2006 he joined the veteran director, Robert Altman in a, surprisingly, drama musical movie “A Prairie Home Companion”.

Tommy is due to appear in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ in 2011 and will be hoping to leave behind the negative reception of ‘Men in Black II’ with a third instalment of the science fiction action comedy film. In 2012 he played a Congressman fighting to help Abraham Lincoln end slavery in Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, a role that led to an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
