Steven Spielberg

Film director, screenwriter, producer, and business man are the names that describe Steven Spielberg, born on the 18th of December 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in English. Because California State had no formal film program, he frequently went to the movies and saw every film that he could.

 

He spent his childhood in Haddon Township, New Jersey, where he saw one of his first films in a theatre, as well as in Scottsdale, Arizona.Throughout his early teens, Spielberg made amateur 8 mm “adventure” films with his friends, the first of which he shot at the Pinnacle Peak Patio restaurant in Scottsdale.

 

At age thirteen, Spielberg won a prize for a 40-minute war film he titled Escape to Nowhere which was based on a battle in east Africa. In 1963, at age sixteen, Spielberg wrote and directed his first independent film, a 140-minute science fiction adventure called Firelight (which would later inspire Close Encounters). Spielberg won the Academy Award for Best Director for Schindler’s List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998).

 

Spielberg has also tackled literary adaptations, such as The Colour Purple (1985) and Empire of the Sun (1987). And audiences around the world were riveted by the continuing adventures of his daredevil hero, Indiana Jones, in such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark(1981) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984).

 

Imaginative fantasy is dominant in his version of Peter Pan, Hook (1991), Jurassic Park (1993), and its sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).The Holocaust drama Schindler’s List (1993) starring Liam Neeson as a businessman who helps save Jews won seven Academy Awards, including Spielberg’s first win as Best Director.

 

The late 1980s found Spielberg’s projects at the centre of pop-culture yet again. In 1988, he produced the landmark animation or live-action film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).

The next year proved to be another big one for Spielberg, as he produced and directed Always (1989) as well as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and Back to the Future Part II (1989).

 

All three of the films were box-office and critical successes. Also, in 1989, he produced the little known comedy-drama Dad (1989), with Jack Lemmon and Ted Danson, which got mostly mixed results.

 

Spielberg has also had an affinity for animation and has been a strong voice in animation in the 1990s. Spielberg has been extremely active in films there are many other things he has done as well.

 

He produced the short-lived TV series SeaQuest 2032 (1993), an anthology series entitled Amazing Stories (1985), created the video-game series “Medal of Honour” set during World War Two, and was a starting producer of ER (1994).

 

Spielberg, has a great interest in World War Two. He and Tom Hanks collaborated on Shooting War (2000), a documentary about World War II combat photographers, and he produced a documentary about the Holocaust called Eyes of the Holocaust (2000).

 

Spielberg married actress Amy Irving in 1985. They had one son, Max, before a divorce. He later married Kate Capshaw in 1991, which produce five children.
