Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie Voight was born on June 4, 1975, in Los Angeles, California, to actor Jon Voight and actress Marcheline Bertrand. Angelina Jolie became a popular actress in the 1990S. She gave a star-making performance in the 1998 television film Gia based on the short, tragic life of model Gia Marie Carangi, which won her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. At age 11, Angelina began studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where she was seen in several stage productions.

She undertook some film studies at New York University and later joined the renowned Met Theatre Group in Los Angeles. At age 16, she took up a career in modelling and appeared in some music videos.

Her good looks may derive from her ancestry, which is German and Slovak on her father’s side, and French-Canadian, Dutch, German, Czech, and remote Huron, on her mother’s side.

Jolie made her screen debut as a child alongside her father, Jon Voight, in Lookin’ to Get Out (1982), but her film career began in earnest a decade later with the low-budget production Cyborg 2 (1993).

Angelina got a major break in 1999 when she won a leading role in the successful feature The Bone Collector (1999), starring alongside Denzel Washington. In that same year, Jolie gave a tour de force performance in Girl, Interrupted (1999) playing opposite Winona Ryder.

The movie was a true story of women who spent time in a psychiatric hospital. Jolie’s role was reminiscent of Jack Nicholson’s character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), the role which won Nicholson his first Oscar.

In 2004, Jolie began filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005) with co-star Brad Pitt. The film became a major box office success. There were rumours that Pitt and Jolie had an affair while filming “Smith”.

Jolie insisted that because her mother had been hurt by adultery, she herself could never participate in an affair with a married man; therefore there had been no affair with Pitt at that time.

Nonetheless, Pitt separated from his wife Jennifer Aniston in January 2005 and, in the months that followed; he was frequently seen in public with Jolie, apparently as a couple.

During 2005, Jolie found time to get involved in Live8 and visited post-earthquake Pakistan. She adopted Zaharah Marley, a little Ethiopian girl as a sister for Maddox and, to her delight; Brad Pitt decided to adopt both children as his own.

And in May 2006, Angelina also gave birth to her own child by Brad Pitt, Shiloh Nouvel, who was born in Namibia whilst the couple were in Africa.

Jolie co-starred alongside James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman in the 2008 action movie Wanted, an adaptation of Mark Millar’s graphic novel of the same name. The film received predominately favourable reviews and proved an international success, earning $342 million worldwide.

She provided the voice of Master Tigress in the DreamWorks animated movie Kung Fu Panda (2008). With revenue of $632 million internationally, it became the third-highest grossing film of 2008.

She has received an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards, and was named Hollywood’s highest-paid actress by Forbes in 2009,2011, and 2013.

Jolie promotes humanitarian causes, and is noted for her work with refugees as a Special Envoy and former Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
